We will provide fishing rods, reels, tackle and modern electronic and sonar equipment on all our guided trips. Each person is allowed to keep two fish, and our guides will gut, clean and prep them for you. If you are early you can hang out by the lake, grab a coffee, and just enjoy the beautiful views. During his presentation he shared about the history of the lake. He had a variety of pictures he walked around to show to support what he was sharing which was helpful for all of us to get a better idea of what he was talking about.

Lake Minnewanka begins to freeze around December and will remain frozen until the end of April when the lake unfreezes. There’s a short period in the winter when the lake freezes, but the snow has yet to cover the ice making it a fantastic place to go ice skating in Banff. To visit any national park in Canada, you must purchase a Park Pass (daily or yearly). You can rent a kayak, canoe or motorboat right on the shore of Lake Minnewanka. Alternatively, you can rent a stand-up paddleboard in Banff and explore the lake. TIPIf you’d like to see Lake Minnewanka in winter, you’ll be amazed to find out it completely freezes over and often becomes a giant ice skating rink for a few weeks.

In addition to these, you can also rent kayaks, fishing boats or visit the Lake Minnewanka Cruise for an interpretive voyage across the lake. Parks Canada requires all adult visitors to Canada’s national parks to buy a permit for the duration of their stay to support visitor services and facilities. Day Passes or a yearly Discovery Pass are available to buy in-person at Parks Canada's park gates and information centres in Banff and Jasper.

But if you’re not visiting Jasper, then the Lake Minnewanka cruise is definitely worth it. The scenery is gorgeous and it’s the only cruise available in Banff. On slower days in the non-peak season, the cruise departs on the hour. Lake Minnewanka has a really interesting history, which we learned all about during the cruise.

Take in the spectacular lakeside sights while enjoying a snack or lunch from the Black Anchor Snack Shop. Went on the tour the morning of my birthday, and it was absolutely incredible. They shared some great stories about the area, while providing such a great view. Highly recommend to anyone who's in the area, it was wonderful. There are backcountry campgrounds along the Lake Minnewanka shoreline trail which are reached by hiking 8 km, 9 km or 11 km.

Our guides have years of experience and know all the secret spots to help you locate that prized Lake Trout. The “Discovery Pass” is what Parks Canada calls their year-long (365 days from the purchase date), multi-park entry pass. This pass will give 365 days of access to all participating national parks in Canada. This includes the most popular parks like Banff, Jasper, Yoho, Kootenay, Glacier, Mount Revelstoke, and so much more. We had so much fun on our Lake Minnewanka cruise, it was relaxed and a fun, new way to experience the lake. I also loved learning about the ecology and history of the area, which is actually quite fascinating.

It’s a beautiful emerald-green lake and you can hike from the day-use area and along the shore. Lake Minnewanka is among the most picturesque destinations in Alberta. In fact, we highly recommend bringing binoculars with you on your cruise to scan the shore, as you’ll be sure to spot something interesting. Lake Minnewanka Cruise continues a tradition of connection in one of Banff’s most iconic locations. Feel the fresh mountain air, watch for wildlife and get adventurous on Banff's largest lake.

The diving in Lake Minnewanka attracts as many as 8,000 divers each year to see the submerged resort. As the power demand increased in the 20th century, a dam was built in 1912 by the Calgary Power Co., which flooded part of the resort town. With the onset of WWII and the demand for power in manufacturing even greater in Calgary, a new dam was built. The new dam raised the lake level by 96 feet flooding the resort entirely and forever altering the landscape around the lake. Most notable was the wood log hotel named the Beach House, built in 1886, which spurred the development of a resort town.

Once it started our tour guides for the trip gave us our safety lesson and shared with us what the 1 hour long trip would look like. About 25 minutes out to the middle of the lake, shut the engine off, float around for a few minutes, turn around and come back. You can’t hike around the entire perimeter of the lake, but the Stewart Canyon Trail takes you along the shore from the parking lot to the Stewart Canyon bridge. The whole trail is 6.8 km (4.2 miles), but it’s only 3 km (1.9 miles) to the bridge on a nice, easy route. Lake Minnewanka is one of Banff’s most popular destinations and the parking lot fills quickly. Hop on Roam Transit's Route 6 service and show your cruise ticket to the bus driver to get a FREE RIDE.

Lake Minnewanka is free to visit by purchasing a National Parks Pass. You can purchase a Parks Canada pass at any park gate, and the entrance to Banff National Park is just before Lake Minnewanka. Since the water here is icy glacial water, it has preserved much of the resort town and makes for a unique dive site.

You can fish on the lake on your own, or you can hire a chartered boat with companies like Banff Fishing Unlimited or Pursuit. The boat charter is expensive, but they know all the local fishing holes. To fish in the park, you must have a Parks Canada Fishing Permit and be aware of current regulations. This means you know fishing limits and can identify the various fish within the park.

We have visited the lake what feels like hundreds of times with family and friends, as it’s a great spot to sightsee. The forests around Lake Minnewanka are teeming with wildlife, including mule deer, bears, wolves, elk, bighorn sheep, and an abundant birdlife population. I would highly recommend going and I would even go again in the future. Experienced mountain bikers will love the chance to ride the Lake Minnewanka trail (#4 above). Lake Minnewanka is one of the most popular recreational areas in Banff National Park. There are plenty of great trails for hiking and biking in addition to picnic areas.

The hour-long panoramic cruise heads to Devil’s Gap at the end of Lake Minnewanka and back. For families with young children, it’s worth noting that children aged 5 and under ride for free. The deck is an excellent option if you have a toddler like we did, and you can’t expect them to sit still for an hour. We spent most of our time on the deck, watching the splashing water or lounging on the sun beds. Be cautious if you’re riding in summer during the day as the tourists driving this road often rather look at the views than on the road. TIPYour Lake Minnewanka Cruise tickets include a free return ride on the day of the cruise.
